About the positionWe invite applications for a Position as Researcher available in Geology-Petrology at the Njord Centre, Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo Norway. The appointment is a fulltime position until 31 of December 2028. Starting date as soon as possible and no later than January 2027. Place of work is Njord Centre, University of Oslo at Blindern, Oslo. Njord is a cross-disciplinary Geology-Physics center hosted by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. We focus on the fundamental physics of geological processes related to transport and reactions in deformable porous media, fracturing and fragmentation processes, interface dynamics during geophysical flows, and intermittency and pattern formation in geological systems far from equilibrium. We conduct research on earth systems that range in scale from atoms to continents and apply methods where fieldwork, numerical modelling, experiments, and theory act in concert. The center includes the Oslo-branch of PoreLab, which is a Center of Excellence (CoE), the former CoE, Physics of Geological Processes (PGP) and several externally financed projects. There are ten professors and associate professors at the center, in addition to doctoral research fellows, postdoctoral fellows, researchers and technical and administrative staff - in total about 75 persons. Project descriptionWe seek a geoscientist who will conduct research within the DecarbFaroe project (https://decarbfaroe.fo/), which is funded by the Research Council of Norway in the framework of the Eu Clean Energy Transition Partnership call. This project involves nineteen partners from academia, public research institutes, and industry. DecarbFaroe seeks for a better understanding how carbon dioxide can be mineralized in old basalts of the North Atlantic Volcanic Province that are now exposed in the Faroe Islands. The ultimate goal of the project is to establish a pilot site for carbon dioxide injection and mineralization. Within DecarbFaroe, the successful candidate will conduct research in geology, petrology, and hydrogeology. The research will be carried out in close collaboration with Jarðfeingi, the Faroese Geological Survey. The researcher will characterize basaltic rocks and their mineralization using state of the art analytical techniques (e.g., scanning electron microscopy, X-ray tomography), interpret borehole logging data and the analysis of rock cuttings, and conduct the hydrogeological characterization of the injection site and analyze pumping tests. The researcher is expected to integrate into the project team, collaborate with other researchers, contribute to project deliverables in the form of scientific publications, and present results at DecarbFaroe events and international conferences.
